On the 3rd of December every year, the International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities is celebrated. This year being the 26th edition, was celebrated in a special way with the Global Forum for the Defence of the Less Privileged, GFDLP being fully active.
Celebrated under the theme: “transformation towards a sustainable and resilient society for all”, the event was commemorated at the Rehabilitation Institute for the Blind in Bulu, Buea. The event brought together several government officials, associations of persons living with disabilities, schools for persons living with disabilities as well as well-wishers.
The International Day for People Living with Disabilities is an opportunity given communities to assess the progress made by various actions and realizations to protect and promote the equalization of opportunities for persons living with disabilities, identifying challenges and charting a new way forward. Persons living with disabilities are persons who as a result of physiological, mental, sensory impairment or even an accident added with environmental obstacles are placed in a position of disadvantages vis a vis their environment.
The theme chosen for this 26th edition – “transformation towards a sustainable and resilient society for all” calls for the consideration of the worries particularly of persons living with disabilities so to build a sustainable and resilient world. This is in conformity with the terms of the sustainable development goals ensuring a world that guarantees quality and professional training, decent work, resilient infrastructure for all, reducing inequalities within countries and from one country to the other, such that towns and human institutions could become places which take into account the handicap and vulnerability approach.
The event was indeed fun-filled with lots of exciting activities ranging from dramas, sketches, dances and even sporting games from students of the Rehabilitation Institute for the Blind and Buea School for the Deaf.
In conclusion, the GFDLP boss, Akoh Baudouin Ngah thanked the Director of the Rehabilitation Institute for the Blind Buea for displaying exceptional qualities with his staff and trainees for a job well done and equally thanked all the distinguished quests for giving the ceremony the grandeur it deserves.
